West Side Story is a popular musical play that premiered on Broadway in 1953.  The show has grown younger, more innocent and more endearing over the years. Originally conceived by the noted dance-director Jerome Robbins, the action filled plot is a re-telling of "Romeo and Juliet", set against the dark, rubbish-strewn streets of New York's crowded tenements.  Romeo is Tony, a young Polish-American who has outgrown but cannot quite leave a street gang, "The Jets".  Juliet is Maria, a glowingly beautiful Puerto Rican girl whose brother, Bernardo, is the leader of a rival gang, "The Sharks".

Amid racial tension in the slums, WEST SIDE STORY spins a rapturous tale of young love.  Leonard Berstein's score and Stephen Sondheim's lyrics are superb.  Now famous songs include "One Hand, One Heart", and "Somewhere".  The ominous dance accompaniments for the street fighting episodes as the two gangs unsheath their switch blades for the rumble are colorful and pound with tension.

A large cast of singers and dancers bring the Drury Lane Theatre's stage into the midst of gang warfare with talent and motion.  This is certainly a jet-propelled, fabulous musical you don't want to miss.

We will need to have an accurate attendance list and will accept reservations until March 5th, 2001. To Make reservations call Entertainment Committee Chairman Frank Gorski at 708-560-7817 and leave a message.
